"That's it, though? You'll live your life by this person's whim until your usefulness is run out, then what? If you do run short, what will he do? Kill you, put you to sleep? Will you retire, and if so, what will you do?" She seemed more and more concerned for his lifestyle the more she thought on it, to the point that the concerns of the night were pushed from her mind. "Do you truly not want anything else, even friendship or some accomplishment that does not land on the shoulders of someone else? Even if you do understand and accept your life, even if you choose to remain in that life, will you never aspire to something more for yourself?"

''The consequences for lack of usefulness differs depending on the conditions. I couldn't say for sure, I know some are killed, others are sold off.'' He shrugs, his tail dusting the dirt beside him. ''I don't desire anything aside from fulfilling my duty and pleasing him. It's not complicated.'' Instead of sleeping, due to the fact he wouldn't be able to get any now without running late, he pulled himself out from the hollow and stretched his stiffened body. ''I cannot aspire to be anything more than what I am, that was part of the correction.''

"It's wrong on too many levels," She mumbled mostly to herself. Rising, she addressed him directly, in an almost begging tone, "Don't go back there. Please don't." It might've been startling, the amount of emotion that came with the sudden request. It wasn't just that she felt sympathy for him and his situation; he was also the first sentient being to speak with her for very long, and she found herself not wanting to face the day's tasks without companionship. Returning to her tasks on her own did not hold the joy of duty and hard work now that she had found somebody who wasn't (entirely) keen on trying to eat her or kill her for sport.

His fur jolted at her sudden plea and he even looked back in surprise. ''What?'' It was unexpected, but he should have expected the overly friendly creature to hold him back, no doubt to ask him once again to go back to her little haven instead with her. ''I have to, the consequences for not returning are far more dire than if I were late. Thank you for the conversation but we really must part.''

Her ears went back, then down. Her hooves shuffled uncertainly in the detritus of the forest floor. She wanted to make a better plea and stave off loneliness as well as save him from the lifestyle he seemed so calm about, but she had none. There was no temptation in her task, and it was probably more thankless than his. She had no master, but there was no glory after battling with the elements of corruption, either. But, she tried, if hopelessly, "How can he punish you, if you stay away? The forest is large, surely he wouldn't find you. I know there's no pit fighting, but you saw the beasts here in your single night. It's not glorious but you could have a purpose here too, if you wanted. You could help me try to cleanse this land and make your own place in it."

His head dropped at her question. The punishment if his master found him was unimaginable, all he could do was mumble and shake his head. "Your forest would be razed if he found me here, the punishment for fugitive slaves is something truly terrifying. Besides, this place is your problem. Had the caravan not be attacked we would both be content in our own lives. I do not wish to fight corruption unless I have to. If I got infected then I wouldn't have any coin value, I'd just be a mindless monster with no conscious or self awareness."

She would have liked to argue, but there was nothing new she could say. Moving a few steps closer, she bowed her head towards him. "Then I hope you'll find me if you're ever in the forest again. You're always welcome if you need a safe place." She mustered something close to a smile, if disappointed that she would lose her only company. "I wish you the best. May you fight well."
She did not wait any longer, but turned and bounded off into the forest, making her way back to the small circle of purity in order to begin her usual duties.
